Winter Running Gear Wish List

November 16, 2016 Michelle Homan 16 Comments

The temps are finally starting to drop here in New York, and true winter running will be upon us soon. Running in freezing cold doesn’t sound all that alluring, so having the right gear is critical to making it bearable.

*If you’re not sure what exactly you should be wearing in specific temperatures, check out these great resources:

Winter Running: What to Wear for Every Temp

If you’re a runner, you need this winter running gear! #runchat #sweatpink

Anyway, this post is all about the winter running gear I wish I could go out and buy. Some of it I actually need (really!) and will in fact buy.

GPS Running Watch

There’s nothing actually wrong with my current watch, except that it’s old and doesn’t sync with Garmin Connect. From what I understand, this new model will pair with the app on my phone to sync the workout data.

Running Tights

Clearly one pair of good cold gear running tights is not enough, so I actually do need these. They make a huge difference in keeping leg muscles warm–especially during down time while waiting for a race to start. I’m eyeing these 2XU Women’s Hyoptik Reflective Thermal Compression Tights on Amazon.

Base Layer Top

I LOVE my Craft baselayers (I have one in white and black). At first glance, they appear so thin that they couldn’t possibly keep your core warm, but boy are they deceiving! I though I wanted to add another of the same model to my collection, but then I actually found all this Craft gear on Amazon and I want it all!

First Layer Top Quarter Zip

Where did all my quarter zips go? I think last year I cleaned house of gear that was 10+ years old and intended on restocking this year. Need! Found this from Sugoi, which is a brand I’ve always loved.

Full Zip Jacket

I have a thick wind-stopper jacket, but it’s too bulky for a typical cold weather run. I really have always needed a lightweight jacket like this.

Socks

I’m not big on socks, but when it gets cold my toes go numb pretty quick! I hear that these are great at preventing that.

Head Gear

If you’ve ever caught a rare pic of me on Instagram with my hair down, you may have noticed I have a massive amount of hair. I usually only go with a headband like this for my ears! Mine is so old and stretched out, I can really use a new one.

Gloves/Mittens

I have an old pair of convertible gloves with a mitten shield, similar to these, but I would like something warmer like these.

I may or may not have gotten carried away, but I would love to run outside for the majority of the winter and it is a necessity to have the gear! Please let me know what you think!

What would you add to the list?

I would add that I myself need a good pair of gloves/mittens! I only have cheap ones..I hate thinkig of using ‘good’ ones to wipe off my cold snot 🙂 as I run or the sweat that accumulates on them…but I know investing in a good pair would be soooo nice!

I’ve had a few specialty running gloves, but I really think I want to go with a knit. For my ‘cold’ temperatures, I think that may be fine.

I run all throughout the winter. The biggest pieces I know I need are warm tights. Wind resistant ones are best. A headband and good gloves. If you’ve got those, you can make winter running bareable.

If it’s really cold for Mississippi, then I’ll tuck in a scarf to keep my neck warm but also to chunk after I warm up! Great list!
I’m actually looking forward to some cooler runs!

I wonder if I’ll still need winter running gear living in Austin. It was 90 degrees today!

My mission for this winter is to find a pair of running tights that i actually think are comfortable. I have plenty of tights but none of them fit well!

I need to get a quarter zip! All my quarter zips accidentally snuck their way into my daily athleisure wardrobe. But the extra warms on the neck is so nice for winter running! Great list!
