‘We Totally Won’

April 27, 2015 Michelle Homan 7 Comments

We recently invested in a double jogging stroller so we can easily bring the kids to races, or have them race with us.  It’s super important for us to make running a family affair, and the stroller is an absolute necessity to make that possible.

So we put together our Schwinn Turismo Double Jogging Stroller in preparation for a weekend 5k.  Unfortunately, the weather had been less than desirable to strap the kids in for a test drive prior to race day (so much for never trying anything new on race day!)

A little bit about why we decided on this model:

  • The swivel or fixed front wheel option
  • Price
  • Looks, accessories, ease of use according to reviews

We want (need) to be able to use it for outings as well as racing. Based on this past weekend, it maneuvers great in the swivel position and fits through standard doors. So far so good and I’m really looking forward to getting it out on some training runs.

End of spontaneous stroller review…

…back to the race.

We dreamt of a sunny, warm spring day for this 5k, but were presented with such a cold and windy morning, we almost didn’t even run. We waited until the last possible minute to make our decision. We layered up the baby, tucked her in a blanket, put down the wind guard and went for it.

She ended up absolutely cozy (wish I had a pic) and didn’t make a peep until the last mile, which incidentally may have pushed our pace.

FamilyStrollerRaceWe started the race in the way back with other strollers and kids, not even knowing where the start was. I never started my watch, talked to a bunch of people, and played cat and mouse with my 3 year old in the stroller.

I haven’t been running much lately (and by ‘much’ I mean not at all), so I’d love to tell you that my time was due to the stroller–except I wasn’t pushing it. My husband told me to run ahead and get a training run in, but honestly, I had nothing. So we stayed together, we negative split, and to quote my 3 year old, ‘We totally won!’

I’ll gladly never PR again if it means my daughters want to run with us. Unless of course they start beating me (then it’s on). But for now,  I don’t know when I’ll see a PR again–but after today–I think I’m ok with it.

Love it. I love when my boys ask me if I won when I get home for a race. Love how clueless they are. I keep telling them it’s not about winning but accomplishing something you set out to do but they are still a bit young yet to understand fully.

Yes, we are working on that too! Not sure she how much she understands, but it’s very cute.
