5 Tips to be Successful at Your First Triathlon

April 12, 2016 Michelle Homan 13 Comments

I may or may not be doing multisport races this season, but I still love (and have so much to share!) when it comes to tris. I know that diving into triathlons may seem intimidating, but breaking it down and keeping it simple can be the keys you need to having a successful experience. The season has only barely begun, so here are some tips if you’re getting ready to take the plunge this season!

Taking the plunge? Here’s 5 Tips to be Successful at Your First Triathlon! #sweatpink #triathlon

1. Train

It may seem obvious, but the number of people who sign up for an event and find themselves at the starting line under-prepared is very high.  Signing up for a realistic goal in advance, and staying committed to a training plan, is undoubtedly the first step towards having a successful triathlon experience.

2.Learn from experienced triathletes

Let’s face it, races can be unpredictable and there are an infinite number of in’s and out’s that only experienced triathletes can know.  Hang around and listen to their stories.  Ask questions and take mental notes—they will eventually come in handy.

3. Visualize the race

Probably one of the most under-utilized techniques, visualizing your actions prior to race day can be one of the most effective ways to build confidence and fluency if you don’t have much race experience.  In your mind, you can ‘practice’ exactly what you want to do.  If you’ve done your training, triathlon is very much a mental game and going through each and every step will give you an edge on race day.

4)  Stay Calm

Not only can panicking cost you time, it can be dangerous.  Staying calm and safe during a triathlon will keep your heart rate down and keep your mind focused.  Preempt situations that you know may cause anxiety and have strategies to alleviate those situations.

5)  Enjoy the day

Remember why you entered the race in the first place.  Soak in all the success the day has to offer—fitness, courage, camaraderie, achievement, and fun.

Triathlons are an attainable goal for anyone looking to be active and have fun.  Not sure where to start?

I continually say “one day” when it comes to tris. One day I’ll do one. Maybe. Probably 😉

The thought of doing a try intimidates me so much! I haven’t ridden a bike outside in probably close to 20 years, and my swimming skills are pretty weak. I tried to swim a few times over the last few years and ended up with way too much water up my nose. But who knows- maybe one day!
