One of the biggest pitfalls of goal setting is too many goals. Trying to go from zero to hero is a recipe for disappointment. So instead of crafting an image of perfection and then falling short, I’m a huge proponent of staggering goals–or in other words, outlining smaller more specific goals on the way to a larger one.
But before any of that, it’s important to reflect on what worked and what didn’t. I use a freehand version of this in my journal and it provides me with invaluable information going forward when I am looking to set goals.
I created a worksheet to guide you in this process–click here to download it!
With that being said, today I wanted to share one goal for my 2017 in each of these areas–athletic, personal, blogging. It’s easy to get caught up in making too many goals, but just as I outlined above, each of these singular goals will be broken down, practiced, and implemented over the course of time.
Athletic Goals
Get Stronger
So the CrossFit box where my husband was introduced to the 6 week challenge (and where he still goes!) had an amazing Black Friday sale for their January 6 week challenge–guess who signed up? You guessed it. I think my goal of getting stronger will be adequately addressed by going to CrossFit 3 days a week for 6 weeks! I’m a little nervous, but can’t wait to see the results!
I’m not sure how much time this will leave me for running, but I figured winter is the ideal time to embark on a challenge like this. I’m hoping that the increased strength will benefit my running when I do get a chance to hit the road.
Personal Goals
Finding Time
We all know that there are only so many hours in a day and so many goals we wish to accomplish. Without a schedule, attending to everything will be impossible. Hopefully this will be the year I consistently utilize a planner!
Blog Goals
Build up resources
I currently have a popular run planning page, and a workbook, but the teacher in my would really like to offer more resources so readers can take action as opposed to simply consuming information (something I am trying to work on myself!)
So to sum it up, in 2017 you can expect to see me CrossFitting, running, planning/organizing, and offering up new resources on the blog!
It’s definitely going to be an exciting year, and one of my goals is to create resources to share with you. So hopefully your follow me on Instagram (where I hang out most), Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest to stay in the know. My email subscribers get special gifts too, so you may want to sign up below if you like goodies delivered to your inbox!
Happy goal setting!

Once again, this year I am trying to focus on priorities. Because, to be honest, some of my goals have unknown timelines!
Totally! Prioritizing ties in with my finding time…always trying to manage it all more efficiently!
I love this. It’s a slightly different approach from what I’ve been using – – and it will integrate into mine perfectly

Thanks!! It really helps me to clearly see where I should direct my efforts.
It’s hard to prioritize goals and not want to do it all! Thanks for the tips and the linkup

So hard! Still trying to find more hours OR really just work smarter!
This year I am really trying to work smarter not harder. At the end of the year I was beginning to feel burned out but I’m actually going to start planning ahead better and get stuff done this year 🙂
It helps so much to plan ahead…ironic that it’s difficult to schedule in time to plan! 🤔
I love the idea of creating resources. That’s something I’m really lacking on my site as well. Thanks for the worksheet!
When assessing my skills, I realized as a teacher I love creating resources, so why shouldn’t I share that here as well!
Making too many goals is definitely a pitfall. I’m excited to follow your CrossFit journey. I miss it!
I love your goals! CrossFit looks amazing but I get so scared that I would lift something and end up getting hurt! I hope you enjoy your 6 weeks!
I can also relate to the need for better time management!

Totally agree with minimizing the amount of goals. You’re just setting yourself up for failure if you have too many goals.
I love the worksheet. Thanks so much for providing that!
CrossFit definitely sounds like a great way to build strength in the off season! As many others mentioned, my goal for this month (and the whole year) is to work smarter instead of harder, so lots of organizing and setting smaller goals!
