I have to say, I seem to be on a bit of a running roll lately. Races, supplemented with my Selden Hills group runs, have had me moving pretty much every weekend.
I guess that makes me a weekend warrior?
Regardless, just running that one day a week has me feeling good.
Again, I entered this race with no expectations besides running comfortably and hopefully meeting (or beating) my time from last week’s race.
I’ve run this race plenty of times before and know that no matter what the weather, there is always a breeze when you are on the south shore. I braced myself for a cold wall of wind as I turned the first corner, but to my surprise, it wasn’t all that bad. From that point on, I knew I could focus on my stride, cadence, foot strike, etc.
I actually wore my Garmin and was able to track my pace. Although I can’t look back and see my splits, I remember being very consistent as I checked in at each mile marker. And to my surprise, I crossed the finish at 24:37 averaging a 7:54 pace.
It sounds silly, but after the race I felt light–like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Just seeing that 7:54 gave me hope that I can get back to where I should be.
Obviously I’m not putting the work in now–we’ll leave that for next season at this point–but for now, I’ll be happy to call myself a weekend warrior as long as it means I’m moving forward.
What’s your connotation of the term ‘weekend warrior’?

Woot- way to go! That is an awesome time!!!
Thanks! I was thrilled!
Great time! I’m not going to lie, I get confused by the term weekend warrior. I think it has come to mean so many things over the years, and I don’t know what means what! So if you think you are a WW, you do that!
Exactly! What the heck does it mean? And why is it bad?? I think it’s ok to go through phases where the weekends are all you can manage.
Wow, awesome race!! If being a Weekend Warrior means running a sub-8-min/mile, sign me up!!
I am so glad I found your blog! I am originally from Selden and NEVER meet anyone from there!! I will definitely hook up with you the next time I’m visiting my parents (they live in Mt. Sinai now). I did run with a group on a trail in Port Jeff last time I was there and I think they were part of this group. Hopefully I can run with you, though not sure I can keep up 🙂

Wait, WHAT?! I love that! Our group is huge now and I know people often run that trail. Message me whenever you in town and we’ll totally run the hills!
I don’t know if it makes you a weekend warrior but it does make you pretty bad ass! Thanks for the link up today

Lol, thanks! I’m still struggling with that term!
It’s great to get your confidence back. You can definitely rebuild and I look forward to following your journey next year as you do.
It definitely is…I can’t wait for next season!
Woohoo!! Gettin’ that speed back! Way to go!
Thanks! It felt great!
Nice job! You’ll be back to your happy pace in no time.
Thanks! I’m looking forward to it!!
