Rob’s Run Race Recap 2016

November 30, 2016 Michelle Homan 10 Comments

I can’t believe I almost didn’t sign up for Rob’s Run this year. I’ve run the past two years on a team of four, but I’ve always felt so much pressure–so this year I {almost} bailed. I told our group leader that I wasn’t doing it this year, that I didn’t want the pressure of being ‘fast’ for my team…but I did tell him that if he really need me, I’d run.

This is just the part of my group that ran Rob’s Run this year.

Sure enough, he needed me.

My team, The Jingle Belles, was so much fun. The girls already had costume plans and I agreed to whatever they needed me to do–I ended up jingling all the way through the race.

As of writing this, we lost the Best Costume contest by a landslide to the Turtles who earned their win with hand painted ‘shells’, masks, and all the attention to detail!

In between all the fun was an actual 5k trail race. One of the issues with this race had always been the crowd. If you didn’t get to the woods first, you were often stuck without an opportunity to pass until later on. So this year, one of the changes (along with a change in the overall course), was to have the women start at 9am and the men at 9:30. It really worked nicely by alleviating the crowdedness in the trails.

So if you’ve been following me, my running schedule is highly inconsistent, but when I do run it’s usually very hilly and 4-6 miles. That gave me reassurance that tackling 3 in the trails would be doable–I just had to settle on a pace. I ended up not wearing my Garmin, not because I didn’t want to, but because it obviously wasn’t charged.

I went out with a running buddy who I’ve been running the hills with–our running careers are really in unison right now and we like to talk everything from kids to our running glory days when we used to run to PR. She eventually pulled away a bit, but I felt like I was running a comfortably hard pace that was good for a 5k. Judging from my highly accurate mile marker math, I think I ran a pretty consistent pace. Where I really feel the lack of fitness is in that last half mile or so when I used to have a kick. I had no kick, but was happy to know that I left it all out there!

Throw back to yesterday running through the woods and jingling all the way! 🎄 Action shot from Rob’s Run 📷🏃🏼‍♀️ Shout out to all the amazing volunteers that made adjustments this year to ensure an amazing experience could be had by all! Full recap will be up Wednesday 💻

I actually ran very similar to last year and was happy to achieve my secret goal.

In other news, my husband received an email from his CrossFit about a Black Friday Sale for the next 6 week challenge–guess what?? Starting in January I will be officially inducted into all this CrossFit business! I’m excited and nervous, but I already bought two new pairs of leggings!

On a side note, I feel like lately I talk a lot here about not being in my best running shape and my struggles, when I wish I was talking about how awesome my workouts went and how I plan to PR. But then I realized, I’m not here to make it look easy, I’m here to make it look real. This is real life. Sometimes it’s a struggle to stay afloat and sometimes it’s smooth sailing. I definitely believe that one day I’ll be talking about PR’s once again–hopefully you hang around with me long enough to see it!

Great job on the run! I would love to get into crossfit. But every time I see the cost it scares me away.

Um, the bells on your legs. Hilarious. And maddening, I am sure! Great job, and good luck with Cross fit!

Luckily the bells were very subtle! I was afraid I would have to either apologize along the whole way or just run really fast!

You look so cute. Those Turtles look pretty badass, too.

Yay CrossFit! I’m excited to follow your journey. I’ve always wanted to try CrossFit but I’m secretly terrified.

Thanks!! I’m a little terrified also, but my husband had a great experience with the 6 week challenge program, so I’m looking forward to it!
