Mother’s Day 5k

May 12, 2012 Michelle Homan Leave a Comment

Looking for a fresh Mother’s Day idea?  Pledge to get fit with your family this Mother’s Day by signing up for a 5k run/walk.   Research shows that people are happier when they exercise, and moms are no exception!  A healthier, happier mom will have a positive impact on everyone.  So why wait?  Moms, put you and your family’s health first this Mother’s Day.  Active.com has all the information you need to find a family friendly run/walk in your area, and the tips to get you there prepared.

Start by visiting Active.com’s Mother’s Day Running section to browse local races.  You’ll notice that these are fun, family events meant to promote family fitness.  Most races are about $20 for adults, and either free or very inexpensive for kids.  Perks typically include a race t-shirt to commemorate the day, bagels, fruit, drinks, and other great food for the post-race party, music, raffles, and tons of camaraderie and fun.

Child’s Play

Brush off that jogging stroller, scout out the neighborhood park, and get moving!  Once you’ve signed up, schedule some time to ‘practice’ with your family.  Making fitness part of your lifestyle can teach children at a young age that fitness is important and fun.  Young children love to run when given the opportunity, so find a safe place and become a kid again.  Challenge them to race, encourage them to skip, gallop, back-peddle, or even crabwalk.  All of these are important motor skills for children to learn, and movements that will benefit fitness while also keeping it interesting.  Playing soccer, jumping rope, or even a simple game of tag isn’t just child’s play—these activities can benefit adults’ fitness while also providing essential bonding time with the kids.

Training Tips

You’re surly thinking that this all sounds great in theory, but “how am I ever going to finish a 5k?” is probably what is keeping you from clicking the ‘register now’ button.  First off, a Mother’s Day event is a great place to start.  The race will be completely family oriented with moms just like you, overcoming their doubts and changing their lives one step at a time.  Second, walking is something your body can do for several miles before it even begins to get tired.  Give you body some credit!  Third, you are going to practice before the big day.  This way you will have confidence and be relaxed enough to fully enjoy the moment.  Finally, if the idea of a 5k sets off a competitive spark inside you, there is an abundance of information and plans for beginning runners.

Encourage your family to get fit together this Mother’s Day.  Embark on the journey to a fit lifestyle by participating in a family friendly Mother’s Day 5k.  Sign up now and start living the healthy lifestyle you’ve always wanted.
