Benefits of Kettlebells

October 28, 2011 Michelle Homan Leave a Comment

Kettlebells can be an effective and exciting addition to your workout. Kettlebells are a ball of weight with a handle that encourages movements not easily replicated with other pieces of equipment.  Ranging from very light weight to more challenging weights, kettlebells offer benefits for people of all fitness levels.

Benefit #1- Fun

One of the top reasons people do not stick to an exercise program is that it lacks excitement.  Kettlebells offer an opportunity to break from the monotony of the routine while providing excellent results.  Because of the unique shape and handle, kettlebell workouts incorporate a swinging motion.  This swinging motion keeps the exerciser engaged and focused on controlling the movement, instead of just counting reps.

Benefit #2- Versatility

Given the appropriately weighted kettlebell, it is easy to perform a total body routine.  The basic kettlebell motion requires all muscles to be activated and engaged to control the swinging movement.  Only small alterations are needed to change the primary working muscles.  Kettlebells allow for versatility and creativity by the user.  Experimenting with movements and adapting movement to fit unique needs is a specialty of the kettlebell.

Benefit #3- Effectiveness

Since kettlebells utilize a swinging motion that incorporate the entire body, a kettlebell workout is extremely effective.  Because of the total body workout kettlebells lend themselves to, less time can be spent in the gym but superior results can be achieved.  Unlike isolated strength training, the swinging motion of the kettlebell keeps the heart rate elevated incorporating a cardio element while simultaneously training muscles.  The core and lower back are constantly engaged for stabilization of the motion, and the legs are constantly squatting to propel the motion of the kettlebell.  Kettlebell workouts can provide maximal results with only minimal time.

Benefit #4- Its Easy!

Kettlebells can be found at any major sporting goods store, and even stores like Target carry them in their sporting goods isle.  Pick one up and get swinging!

Tips

Start with a light weight.  Once swinging, kettlebells get heavy fast.  Always focus on form while performing kettlebell activities and engage all of your muscles—especially the core and legs.  Start with the basic kettlebell swing to build confidence and strength.  This movement alone with give you an unparalleled workout.

If you have been searching for a fun, challenging, time-saving, total body workout—kettlebells may be just the tool you have been looking for.  Give kettlebells a try and propel your fitness, and your workout, to a new level.
