Let’s face it, winter is tough. Cold, dark, and even colder–winter presents a set of challenges that can make it hard to stay motivated to reach your fitness goals. But winter is only temporary and can serve as a perfect time to lay the groundwork for a successful spring and summer season.
1. Identify Concrete Goals for the Upcoming Season
Having goals, such as specific races, will give you motivation, purpose, and direction for winter workouts. With nothing to look forward to, winter can end up being way too long.
2. Try Something New
Looking to shake it up? Winter is a great time to try a new class or workout.
3. Redefine ‘Fit’
Remember, your winter fitness is not the same as your in season fitness. I am definitely not in my prime running shape right now, but am learning that it’s ok and to redefine my winter fit to focus on strength.
4. Explore Motivation
Sometimes we all need a little extra push, and winter requires a little extra creative motivational techniques. Tactics your don’t normally use–such as music, reading, or pictures that remind you of your goals–can give you the energy you need to keep going strong.
5. Go Easy on Yourself
Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment and depression this winter. Set reasonable goals and be forgiving.
What are your tips for staying fit in the winter?

Great tips Michelle. The winter blues or Seasonal Affect Disorder can easily derail your energy and motivation.

Thanks Jill. It’s important to appreciate the little things in the winter and look forward to warmer, brighter days ahead!
Great tips! I find that having a plan really helps me to stay motivated in the winter. I am currently training for a spring half which keeps me accountable to get up and get my training runs and workouts in!

It’s a good thing that I don’t live anywhere cold or I’d be in trouble. My challenge is in the summer because of the heat in the desert. But at least I can get out early in the morning.

Great tips. Winter can be daunting, especially when its 10 degrees outside. I definitely agree with number 5 in that you should go easy on yourself. When its freezing outside its not a bad idea to skip the workout and read a good book instead! Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness.

All great tips, especially the one about going easy on yourself. There will be some winter obstacles, particularly weather, that you have no control over and may be difficult to push through.

We all have to accept weather at some point!
I definitely lose my motivation in the winter, it’s easy to do when you are stuck inside a lot. I have to write it on my calendar. I’m obsessed with lists and crossing things off when they are done, so that helps a lot!
Hi there Michelle, winter is usually the worst season for me to do my routine workouts and sometimes I just avoid running and other hardcore workouts. I however joined a winter workout challenge which is keeping me locked and I have been super active than any other winter. Thanks for sharing these tips.

Challenge groups are a great idea to stay motivated!
