5 Songs That Got Me Through Marathon Training

September 18, 2015 Michelle Homan 18 Comments

Today I’m linking up with Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What and Mar at Mar on the Run for the Friday Five! This week’s theme is Favorite Songs to Pump Up a Workout!

5 Songs

During my marathon training this summer, I really started relying on music (sometimes podcasts) to get me through tempo and long runs. But the effects of music go beyond just being bored and needing something to listen to. Actual scientific studies have proven the connection between music and motivation/performance.

This quote from an article from The American Council on Exercise says a lot:

“Music is like is a legal drug for athletes,” says Costas Karageorghis, Ph.D., from London’s Brunel University School of Sport and Education, one of the world’s leading authorities on music and exercise. “It can reduce the perception of effort significantly and increase endurance by as much as 15 percent.”

Boom. There it is. So load up your playlist knowing that science backs you.

Five Favorite Songs to Pump Up a Workout

*This is so hard, so I’m just going with the 5 songs that are most recent on my playlist!

1. Geronimo by Sheppard

2. Fight Song by Rachel Platten

3. Renegades by X Ambassadors

4. Go Big or Go Home by American Authors

5. Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon

I also read in the same article, that you should choose songs according to what you want your heart rate to be. So faster is not always necessarily better. Lyrics also mean a lot to me, in addition to a quick beat.

What’s on your playlist right now?

Great list! I love all those songs too. You should check out “Work This Body” by Walk the Moon. I found it when I became obsessed with Shut Up and Dance.

I really like the Fight song. That Shut Up and Dance song has been so overplayed. I am kind of getting sick of it. Plus it’s one of my songs on a playlist for spin class. So I hear it alot!

I like Fight Song! But lately I’ve been listening to “oldies’. I like a lot of rock and rap.
